How to Upgrade Your Red Card to a Blue Card
If you’re currently working in construction with a Red CPCS or NPORS Trained Operator Card, the next step in your career is to upgrade to the Blue Competent Operator Card. This guide explains how to do it — and how CADUK Skills Academy can help you get there quickly and easily.
What’s the Difference Between the Red and Blue Card?
The Red Trained Operator Card proves that you’ve passed a training course and the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test. However, it’s only valid for two years and cannot be renewed.
To stay qualified, you’ll need to complete an NVQ in your category of plant or lifting operations, which will then allow you to upgrade to the Blue Competent Operator Card.
How Do I Upgrade to a Blue Card?
- Hold a valid Red CPCS or NPORS Trained Operator Card
- Complete the relevant Level 2 or higher NVQ with an approved assessment centre (like us!)
- Apply to CPCS or NPORS with your NVQ certificate
Once approved, you’ll be issued with a Blue Competent Operator Card that’s valid for 5 years and renewable.
Do I Need Experience Before Starting the NVQ?
Although you can technically begin your NVQ as soon as you hold a Red Card, we recommend that you have at least 6 months of site experience. This gives you time to build up the evidence you’ll need to complete the qualification.
How Long Does the NVQ Take?
Our assessments are fast, flexible, and 100% remote. If you’ve got the right experience and can upload your evidence quickly, many candidates complete their NVQ and upgrade within a matter of weeks.
