Overview

This Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Sweeping, Cleaning & Clearing) is for experienced operatives who use specialist plant machinery to carry out sweeping, cleaning, debris clearance or surface-clearing duties on construction, highways, utilities or civil engineering projects.

This route is different from most plant NVQs because it is not a CPCS category. There is no Red CPCS Trained Operator card requirement for this route. Once you achieve the NVQ, you can use the certificate to apply for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card.

The assessment is built around the work you already do: pre-start checks, preparing the machine, active sweeping or clearing work, safe manoeuvring, dust suppression, environmental controls, emptying or cleaning down where required, completing records and shutting down safely.

No classrooms, no written exams and no theory test with us. You provide workplace evidence and complete a one-to-one assessment discussion with your assessor.

Who is this NVQ for?

This qualification is suitable for experienced operatives who:

It is not a beginner course. The NVQ is for people who are already competent and need their workplace skills formally assessed and certificated.

What This Sweeping, Cleaning & Clearing NVQ Covers

The qualification confirms your competence in the core plant operations requirements and the sweeping, cleaning and clearing plant-specific unit.

You will complete three mandatory units, including the plant-specific unit for Preparing and Operating Plant or Machinery for Sweeping, Cleaning and Clearing in the Workplace.

This route covers specialist sweeping, cleaning and clearing plant used on construction, highways, utilities and civil engineering work.

Evidence You’ll Need

Your evidence comes from your normal sweeping, cleaning or clearing work. Your assessor will guide you, but the evidence must show real workplace activity, not simulation.

Typical evidence includes site documents, a witness testimony, short videos of you operating, and an assessor observation report based on the videos or an on-site observation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key things candidates ask before starting the Sweeping, Cleaning & Clearing NVQ.

Yes. Once you achieve the Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations for Sweeping, Cleaning & Clearing, you can use the certificate to apply for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card under the relevant occupation, subject to the normal CSCS application process.

Sweeping, cleaning and clearing plant is not covered by CPCS in the same way as categories such as excavators, dumpers or telehandlers. This route sits under the CSCS card scheme instead. That means you do not need a Red CPCS card before starting this NVQ. You complete the NVQ and then use the certificate to apply for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card.

The pace depends mainly on how quickly you submit your evidence and respond to assessor feedback. Some experienced operatives complete very quickly when their evidence is ready. Others take longer because of shifts, site access or waiting for the right sweeping or clearing activity to film.

You will have up to 12 months of support from registration if needed.

No. This is a work-based NVQ assessment. There are no classrooms, written exams or college-style assignments. You send evidence from your normal work and complete a one-to-one assessment discussion.

You will normally need evidence such as a pre-start check video, working task video, communication video, shutdown video, RAMS, site induction record, traffic management plan or method statement where applicable, defect report, witness testimony and an assessor observation report.

Your assessor will confirm exactly what is suitable for your own role and site.

No, not in most cases. If you can provide sufficient, verifiable video evidence and supporting workplace documents, we normally won’t need to attend site. If your assessor cannot fully verify competence from the evidence provided, they may request further evidence or arrange an on-site observation. Some candidates also prefer an on-site assessment, and we can arrange this where available. Additional travel or site visit charges may apply depending on location.
