Red to Blue Card Guide

This guide is for general information. If you want to check pricing, confirm suitability or apply, please use the relevant NVQ page linked below.
If you currently hold a Red CPCS or NPORS Trained Operator Card, you will normally need to complete the relevant NVQ before you can apply for a Blue Competent Operator Card.
This guide explains how the upgrade process works, what experience you will need and how CADUK Skills Academy can help.
A Red CPCS or NPORS Trained Operator Card shows that you have completed the required training and passed the relevant theory and practical tests for your category.
It is normally the first card issued to plant operators or lifting operations candidates after training and testing. It allows you to gain site experience before completing the NVQ needed for the Blue Competent Operator Card.
The Red Card is not intended to be your permanent card. To progress to Blue, you will normally need to complete the NVQ that matches your plant or lifting category.
The Blue Competent Operator Card shows that you have completed the relevant NVQ and demonstrated competence in the workplace.
In simple terms, the Red Card shows that you have been trained and tested. The Blue Card shows that you have proved competence through real site work.
Once your NVQ has been completed, you can use the qualification certificate to support your application for the relevant Blue CPCS or NPORS Competent Operator Card.
The process is usually straightforward:
The NVQ must match the category you operate in. For example, if your Red Card is for a telehandler, the NVQ must cover telehandler operations. If your card is for slinger signaller, the NVQ must cover that lifting operations role.
The NVQ you need depends on the category shown on your Red CPCS or NPORS card and the work you actually carry out on site.
Common Plant Operations NVQ categories include excavators, dumpers, rollers, telehandlers, dozers, loaders and other construction plant.
Common Lifting Operations NVQ routes include slinger signaller, crane supervisor and appointed person.
If you are unsure which NVQ category you need, choose the page that best matches your card or role and complete the short application form. One of our assessors will check suitability before enrolment.
We recommend that candidates have at least six months of site experience before starting the NVQ.
This gives you time to build confidence, gain experience and collect the workplace evidence needed for assessment. It also helps make sure that the NVQ can be completed properly and without unnecessary delays.
If you are unsure whether you have enough experience, our assessor can discuss this with you during the free suitability call.
You will have up to twelve months to complete your NVQ, although most experienced operators finish much sooner.
The timescale mainly depends on how quickly you can provide the evidence needed for assessment. Many candidates complete within a few weeks once their evidence is ready.
Your assessor will explain what evidence is needed, check what you already have available and guide you through the process.
CADUK Skills Academy offers both remote and on-site assessment options.
For remote assessments, you collect workplace evidence such as videos, photographs, site documents and witness testimony, then send it directly to your assessor. You will also complete a recorded discussion with your assessor over Zoom.
For on-site assessments, the assessor can visit your workplace to observe you carrying out your normal duties, review evidence and complete the discussion in person.
Both routes are based on real work carried out in your normal job. There are no classroom sessions, no written assignments and no exams.
If you already hold a Red CPCS or NPORS card and have gained experience on site, an NVQ could be your next step towards a Blue Competent Operator Card.
Our assessors can review your experience, explain the process and confirm whether you are ready to enrol. The suitability check is free and there is no obligation to proceed.
