The NPORS Blue Card

The NPORS Blue Competent Operator Card is the recognised card for experienced plant operators, crane operators and lifting operations personnel who have completed the relevant NVQ for their category.

At CADUK Skills Academy, we assess the NVQs that allow experienced operators to upgrade from a Red NPORS Trained Operator Card to a Blue NPORS Competent Operator Card.

This page explains how the NPORS Blue Card works, which NVQs we offer, which CITB Health, Safety and Environment test you may need, card renewal information and the assessment options available.

What is the NPORS Blue Card?

The NPORS Blue Competent Operator Card confirms that an operator has achieved the relevant NVQ and demonstrated competence in the workplace for a specific plant, crane or lifting operations category.

NPORS is one of the main plant operator card schemes used across UK construction and related industries. NPORS cards can also carry the CSCS logo where the required Health, Safety and Environment test and card requirements have been met.

NPORS quick facts

How do I get a Blue NPORS Card?

To upgrade from Red NPORS to Blue NPORS, you need to:

1. Hold the relevant Red NPORS card
You must already have completed the required NPORS theory and practical tests for the category.

2. Complete the relevant NVQ
The NVQ is assessed using evidence from your normal work, including videos, photos, site documents, witness testimony and assessor discussion.

3. Apply for the Blue NPORS Card
Once your NVQ is achieved, you can use the certificate to apply for the Blue NPORS Competent Operator Card through NPORS.

CADUK Skills Academy provides the NVQ assessment stage only. We do not provide NPORS training courses, theory tests or practical tests for the Red NPORS card.

Do I need a Red NPORS card first?

Yes. The Blue NPORS Card is only available as an upgrade from the Red NPORS Trained Operator Card.

If you do not hold the Red card, you will need to complete the required NPORS theory and practical tests before you can enrol onto the NVQ.

Which HS&E test do I need?

You need a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment test when applying for an NPORS card carrying the CSCS logo.

Plant operators and slinger signallers need the Operatives test. Crane Supervisors and Appointed Persons need the Specialist/Supervisory test.

Can I move from CPCS to NPORS?

NPORS and CPCS are separate card schemes with their own testing and application requirements.

If you hold an CPCS card and want n NPORS card, you will usually need to pass the NPORS theory and practical tests.

How long does it take?

Most experienced operators complete their NVQ within 1–2 weeks, and in many cases even sooner.

You’ll have up to 12 months to complete the qualification if required, although the vast majority of candidates finish much faster.

How much does it cost?

Our Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs are £745 + VAT per category, with discounts available where multiple categories are completed together.

The Level 4 Crane Supervisor NVQ is £1,095 + VAT, and the Level 5 Appointed Person NVQ is £1,250 + VAT.

Need your Red card extended?

If your Red NPORS card has recently expired, you can apply for a 12-month extension by registering onto the relevant NVQ.

The extension is only granted once. If you do not complete the NVQ during this period, you will need to retake the relevant NPORS theory and practical tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Blue NPORS Competent Operator Card is valid for 5 years before it needs renewing.

Yes, if you are applying for an NPORS card carrying the CSCS logo, you will need a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.

The correct CITB HS&E test depends on your CPCS category.

Plant operators and slinger signallers need the Operatives test. Crane Supervisors and Appointed Persons need the Specialist test.

NPORS and CPCS are separate card schemes with their own testing and application requirements.

If you currently hold a CPCS card and want to obtain an NPORS card, you will need to pass the relevant CPCS theory and practical tests for that category before applying for a CPCS card.

NPORS offers two types of operator card.

The Traditional NPORS Card is not CSCS accredited and does not carry the CSCS logo. It is commonly used in industries such as agriculture, utilities, warehousing, waste management and other sectors where a CSCS card is not required.

The NPORS/CSCS Card carries the CSCS logo and is widely accepted across the construction industry. To upgrade from a Traditional Card to an NPORS/CSCS Blue Competent Operator Card, you must hold the relevant NVQ and pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test.

If your Traditional Card is still in date, or expired within the last 12 months, you may be eligible to upgrade without repeating your practical assessment.

In most cases, yes. If you can provide clear, verifiable workplace videos, photos and supporting documents, your assessor can usually complete the assessment remotely. On-site assessment can also be arranged where available, although additional charges may apply depending on location.

Yes. Where eligible plant categories are completed together, we offer multi-category discounts: 25% off the second NVQ, 35% off the third NVQ, and 40% off the fourth and subsequent NVQs.

Completing more than one category?

Many experienced operators hold more than one CPCS or NPORS category.

Level 2 Plant Operations NVQs are made up of two mandatory units and one machine-specific unit.

Once the mandatory units have been achieved, they do not need to be repeated if you complete another Plant Operations NVQ, meaning additional plant categories only require the machine-specific unit to be completed.

If you complete multiple eligible plant NVQs with us at the same time, we offer discounted rates on additional categories, with savings of up to 40%.
