Which Health & Safety Test Do I Need for CPCS or NPORS?
If you’re applying for a Red CPCS or NPORS Trained Operator Card, or upgrading to a Blue Competent Operator Card, you’ll need to pass a valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test.
But there’s more than one version of the test — so which one is right for your role?
What Is the CITB HS&E Test?
The CITB Health, Safety & Environment test is a multiple-choice exam that proves you have the core health and safety knowledge needed to work safely on a construction site.
You must pass this test before you can apply for a Red or Blue CPCS/NPORS card.
Which Version Do I Need?
There are three main versions of the CITB test:
- Operatives Test – for most plant operators (excavators, dumpers, rollers, etc.)
- Specialist Test – for roles like slinger/signaller and piling rig operators
- Supervisors Test – for those applying as Crane Supervisors or Appointed Persons
Examples by Role:
- 360 Excavator Operator → Operatives Test
- Dumper, Roller, Telehandler → Operatives Test
- Slinger/Signaller → Specialist Test (Slinger/Signaller category)
- Crane Supervisor → Supervisors Test
- Appointed Person (Lift Planner) → Supervisors Test
When Should I Take the Test?
You must pass the correct HS&E test before applying for a Red card (CPCS or NPORS with CSCS logo). The test result is valid for 2 years.
How to Book Your Test
You can book the CITB test online via the CITB website or by calling 0344 994 4488. The test takes 45 minutes and costs around £22.50.
