Who is this NVQ for?

The Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations (Crane Supervisor) is for experienced crane supervisors or lift supervisors who are responsible for planning, coordinating and supervising lifting operations on live construction sites.

It is not suitable for trainees or operatives who are not currently supervising lifting activities.

What is the NVQ?

This NVQ confirms your competence supervising lifting operations safely and effectively. You are showing that you can implement lift plans, manage people and plant, control risks, and coordinate lifting activities within wider site operations.

How does assessment work?

Assessment is based on evidence from your normal site work. There are no classroom sessions, written exams, or training days.

Your evidence is reviewed by a qualified lifting operations assessor, followed by an online professional discussion over Zoom to confirm your competence.

What evidence is needed?

Evidence is based on tasks you already carry out in your role, such as:

• Short site videos
• Site photographs
• RAMS for lifting operations
• Lift plans (implemented on site)
• Briefings / toolbox talks
• Inspection and check records
• Meeting notes or coordination records
• Programmes or work schedules
• Accident or near-miss reports (if applicable)
• Witness testimony

What happens after applying?

A lifting operations assessor will contact you for a short, informal call to confirm the NVQ is suitable and achievable for your role and site.

If suitable, you can then choose when to enrol and begin. There is no obligation to proceed after the call.
